Once you’ve come to your appointment and chosen your Starlight Home, there may be a little time before your move-in date. During that period, it’s still important to continue preparing in other ways, so that once you’ve closed on your new home, the move is as smooth and painless as the buying process.
Below are just a few of items that you should include on your moving to-do list, that will help you get settled as quickly and easily as possible:
Set Up Your Utilities
Make sure everything is working on move-in day by reaching out to the utility companies that service your new community to start the process of getting new services established.
Change Your Address with Post Office and IRS
Officially changing your address with USPS and the IRS to ensure your mail, among other things, can find you!
Find Moving Help
Begin to rally the troops! Whether you’re going with a moving company or asking friends and family for help, the further in advance you begin organizing the logistics of your move, the less stress you’ll have to deal with on your big day.
Plan for Your New Home
This is the exciting part, you’ll want to start thinking about how you’ll use the new space. Decide what current belongings you will take with you and how you will decorate your new home to show off your personal style.
Find Your Nearest Schools
New homeowners with families will want to think ahead and contact schools within the district to find out what documents will be required for transferring.
Assemble a Toolkit
Stock your toolkit with things like nails, a hammer, screwdriver or drill, and anything else you’ll need to personalize your new home.
As you’re anxiously awaiting the closing day for your new home, there are also a few things you’ll want to avoid doing until after you've moved in and settled:
Don’t Make Any Large Purchases
If you’ve had your eye on a flashy new car for a while, keep looking for just a little longer. Since you were pre-approved based on certain criteria, that criteria needs to remain the same. Any purchases that require lump sums of cash could jeopardize your closing.
Don’t Buy Any New Furnishings
Waiting until you’re moved in before buying new furniture allows you to get a feel for your space and determine what you truly need in it. Waiting will also ensure that there aren’t any negative hits on your credit for these larger purchases.
Don’t Do Anything That Would Affect Your Credit
From opening new credit cards to allowing a hard inquiry to be made for any reason, you’ll want to avoid doing anything that would have a negative effect on your credit scores until after you’ve moved in.
These are just a few of the important do’s and don’ts of preparing to move into your new Starlight Home. If you have any more questions about how to make the transition as smooth as possible, our New Home Sales Consultants are always around to be your guides.
