Overcoming Your Home Buying Fears

Ghosts, goblins and ghouls, oh my. Spooky season is here, and it has arrived with our favorite creepy terrors. While we’re surrounded by frights this October, it’s a good time to face another common fear: homebuying.

If buying a home scares you, you’re not alone. It’s normal to feel afraid when making such a significant investment, but owning a home doesn’t have to send shivers down your spine. Going into the process feeling prepared can help you spot the difference between a haunted house and a cozy home. We rounded up a few great questions you can ask as you embark on your journey.

1. What’s the neighborhood like?

Loving your home means loving the location, too. You can ask questions about schools and distances to restaurants and shopping. You can also ask about the neighborhood. Is it quiet? Are there sidewalks? Is there an HOA to keep everything maintained and in order? These are all great questions to keep in your back pocket.

What’s an HOA? We explain all about it.

2. Have there been any renovations?

Since all Starlight homes are new, you don’t have to worry about this with us. If you’re buying a pre-owned home, it’s a good idea to ask about any renovations or additions so that you’re not frightened by DIY projects falling apart or not meeting code after you take ownership.

3. What comes with the property?

Fall in love with a home only to learn that the seller is taking the new refrigerator and that gorgeous light fixture you love? It happens. That’s why it’s a good idea to double check that what you see is what you get. Our homes come as they are, so you won’t find anything mysteriously missing on moving day.

4. What’s the condition of the appliances?

Appliances can look great on the surface, but you never know what you’ll get when you try to make your first meal or run the dishwasher. Since the kitchen is the heart of the home, you’ll want to know it’s functioning well. All Starlight homes come with brand new appliances and warranties, giving you more peace of mind.

5. How old is the roof?

It’s a good idea to ask about the roof because repairs and replacements can be costly. This question is most important if you’re buying a pre-owned home. Since all Starlight homes are brand new, you’ll have nothing to fear if you buy with us.

6. Are there any safety hazards?

Lead paint, asbestos, mold and infestations can be common in older homes. When your health is on the line, it’s good to know what's underneath the surface. Since all Starlight homes are new construction, you’re unlikely to find dangerous materials when you move in.
